Saint Helena Island | Moreton Bay, Brisbane

This picturesque island in Moreton Bay has a turbulent history as the site of Queensland's first penal settlement.

Known as Noogoon by local indigenous populations, the island did not receive the name "St Helena" until 1828. An Aboriginal man known as Napoleon allegedly stole an axe on North Stradbroke Island. Like his namesake, Napoleon Bonaparte, he was exiled to another island, thereafter called St Helena. His exile - not dissimilar to his French counterparts first exile on the Island of Elba - lasted only until he built a canoe to return home.
